The Junji Ito Collection
The wide range of Junji Ito’s work is sure to send chills down your spine and create a strong urge to chat with your sleep paralysis demon about the horrors you just read about. While not for the faint of heart, Junji Ito is the king of horror manga for a reason, serving up intense body horror alongside psychological enigma’s to the point where you may want to cleanse your pallette with a viewing of ‘Hereditary‘ or ‘The Conjuring‘. He’s even done work adapting ‘Frankenstein‘, giving his own take on the cosmic horror genre & depicting the true nightmares of owning cats.
The Department Of Truth
Volume 1 of ‘The Department of Truth’ by James Tynion IV & Martin Simmonds is excellent. BARRY WINDSOR-SMITH MONSTERS HC
The hint is in the name as to why this tops our monster section of this article. Created over a period of 35 years, Barry Windsor-Smith’s ‘Monsters’ is a tour de force of visual storytelling. Part family drama, part espionage thriller, part metaphysical journey, it is an intimate portrait of individuals struggling to reclaim their lives and an epic political odyssey across two generations of American history. Monsters is rendered in Windsor-Smith’s impeccable technique, the visual storytelling being the most sophisticated of the artist’s career. There are passages of heartbreaking tenderness, of excruciating pain, and devastating violence. It is surely one of the most intense graphic novels ever drawn.
